MOUNTAIN HOUSE — The next elementary school slated for construction in Mountain House is Altamont Elementary in the Altamont Village.

The Lammersville Unified School District board approved construction of the school during its Dec. 3 meeting, and on Wednesday, Jan. 2, the board unanimously approved the addition of a preschool center to the campus.

Slated to begin construction this summer, the $30 million elementary school project will consist of 34 classrooms with buildings for administrative offices and a library and for a multipurpose room-cafeteria on campus, according to project architect Dan Rossetto of Nichols, Melburg & Rossetto Architects of Redding.

The school is designed to house 800 to 900 students from kindergarten to eighth grade, Rossetto said during a telephone interview Thursday, Jan 3.

The campus will be built at the corner of West Saint Francis Avenue and Rockridge Street in the Altamont Village.

The project is expected to take a year and a half to build, with completion slated for June 2014.

Rossetto said the school has been in the works for at least three years and received state approval about a year ago.

He said the district was just waiting for funding to start the project.

“Mountain House is one of the few developments that is growing very briskly,” Rossetto said.

The project contractor is expected to be selected in late February, according to Noel Balzarini, executive assistant to the district superintendent.

The preschool center approved Wednesday will be constructed using prefabricated buildings, similar to portables, that will placed on site permanently. Each center will consist of four classrooms, two offices, a kitchen and bathroom facilities.

Superintendent Dale Hansen said Wednesday that the goal is to keep up with the demand of incoming students, particularly in transitional kindergarten.

He told the board Wednesday night it was less expensive to plan the addition during the initial construction phase than to add it later.

Another amenity proposed for the school, but not finalized, is an all-weather track in the playground area on Rockridge Street.
