On Monday, April 25th NMR Architect Kurt Jorgensen (pictured far left) joined Northern Valley Catholic Social Services in celebrating the ground breaking for Valley View Apartments in Chico, CA.

Cities across California are working hard to address the overwhelming need for housing solutions for adults with mental illness and those at risk of homelessness, and Chico is no exception. In conjunction with real estate development company Palm Communities, NVCSS is sponsoring the Valley View Apartment project.

Valley View will create an affordable, permanent and supportive housing community for low income, Mental Health Services Act eligible adults with mental illness who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The project will be funded by Butte County Behavioral Health Mental Health Services Act Program, The City of Chico HOME and CDBG programs, Low Income Housing Tax Credits and North Valley Housing Trust.

When complete, Valley View will provide 14, one bedroom apartments with full kitchens, a manager’s apartment and office, a community center with a meeting space, a computer center, laundry and a vocational training shop. The two story apartment buildings will be grouped in four pods, and each will have its own unique color. The positioning, color and materials used to build the apartment pods are designed to emulate the environment of an intimate village to create a sense of belonging, security and tranquility for residents. In line with NMR’s commitment to sustainable design, the project will achieve a GreenPoint Gold rating.

Located adjacent to the Torres Community Shelter, Valley View will provide needed housing, while remaining true to the mission of NCVSS: to create programs that benefit people when they contribute to the individual’s freedom and independence.
